The Need to Conduct Urbanism Research Based on Research Methodologies in Art

Abstract

Urbanism has emerged from the votes of people who were not urban developer in nature and this field has got an interdisciplinary nature as well. In this study the researcher has tried to investigate research methodologies  and education in urbanism through review of the literature and the definitions as well as introducing urbanism as an art not just as a branch of engineering. The main question of this research is whether urbanism is engineering or an art? or should we follow academic research of the engineering sciences or the approaches in art researches? Nowadays, educational approaches in urbanism have faced crisis and with respect to the academic output of these fields, there is no visible and desirable change in Iran's urbanism industry. Change of attitude in this regard is the main purpose of this research. It is worth mentioning that the study has applied-descriptive approach. Conducting research on urbanism issues requires a serious review. Urbanism should not just depend on scientific and academic approaches but it has to also pay attention to artistic aspects along with technical one. In order for the researchers to conduct studies in urbanism and architecture, they need to establish research in urbanism and architecture based on research metrologies on art. An art which fits no classification and rules is in disagreement with scientific principles.
